Overview

Fuel payments are traditionally card-based and interruptive. With competitors like Apple Pay and Google Pay already offering NFC-based solutions, our challenge was to differentiate with a QR-first approach—especially in locations without NFC hardware.

Venmo wanted to explore QR code payments for fuel to capture a growing opportunity in contactless transactions, especially among Gen Z and Millennial drivers. We set out to create a mobile-first, location-aware flow that would make fuel purchases seamless, without requiring a card swipe or cashier interaction.

Strategy

Focused on reducing friction and aligning with PayPal’s QR ecosystem:

  • Seamless Entry: Created location-aware entry points to initiate the flow.

  • Pump Selection: Designed real-time pump validation.

  • Secure Payment: Integrated QR SDK for safe, pre-fuel authorization.

  • Completion Feedback: Added live status updates and receipt UX.

Each step prioritized speed, clarity, and mobile-native behavior.

Takeaways

This project sharpened my ability to design for real-world contexts—balancing UX clarity with technical constraints like QR SDKs, partner APIs, and location accuracy. It also reinforced the value of designing resilient fallback flows and aligning closely with platform strategy to unlock scalable, partner-ready solutions.
